EVENT EVALUATION WORKSHOP – best practice in evaluation techniques

The whole arena of engaging with different audiences is full of good intentions and ideas and there are many committed people wanting to make a difference. But as a science communication and education community we haven¹t been good at capturing the impact of what we do, nor sharing good practice. It is no longer enough to do activities because we think they¹re worthwhile; we must be clear about the impacts we are trying to have and then go about trying to measure and assess them, and the processes we¹re using. Then we must reflect and consider how we might change and improve what we do and share what we¹ve learned. (Practical Guide to Evaluations Research Council UK).

Have you ever thought…Was your event a success? Did it have the impact you wanted? How can you ensure your message got across? Was it worth the time, money and effort you put in?

These are questions many of us ask after an event. But to have a better chance of answering those questions, event evaluation should be considered in the early stages of planning your event, not as an afterthought.

Join experts in this field – Assoc Prof Nancy Longnecker, Prof Léonie Rennie, Dr Jesse Shore (current ASC President) and others – for this masterclass so you so you can develop or improve your evaluation strategy for your National Science Week or similar events and learn how to use these tools when planning future activities.

Session 1 planning for evaluation and best practice in evaluation. Date: 29 July 2010 Time: 8.30am to 12.30pm (followed by lunch for those interested) Location: Curtin University of Technology (further details provided upon registration)

Session 2 – where to from here? How to analyse your evaluation and use these tools for future projects. Date: TBC likely to be in September Time: TBC but likely to be 8.30am to 12.30pm Location: TBC

Cost for two sessions: ASC members – $12; non-members – $37 (includes registration refreshments and morning tea) To secure your place, please register and pay for this event by visiting: http://ascevaluation.eventbrite.com/

Why not become an ASC member? It’s a great time to do so! At the moment ASC is offering the following – “pay for 12 months and receive membership for 14 months”. We also have several events planned for the rest of the year including Quizalicious (the annual quiz held at Rosie O’Gradys – now in it’s 4th year!), end of year networking event and Christmas lunch and this Evaluation event to name but a few. By supporting your local ASC we can offer more events and resources. To become an ASC member visit: http://www.asc.asn.au/join

WA – Profs and Pints Tuesday 13 July

PERTH – Profs and Pints Tuesday 13 July

BLURRED BOUNDARIES OF HUMANITY We will weave around the ethical challenges and conundrums, exploring humanity in light of technological, biological and artistic evolution.

Scitech is pleased to present free evenings of lively banter that will spark curiosity, ignite discussion and leave you questioning the world as you know it.

The third edition of Profs and Pints will be held on Tuesday 13 July at The Flying Scotsman – Velvet Lounge from 6.00 – 8.00pm where we will delve into a world where boundaries are no longer contained and science can change us.

Speakers include: Prof Alan Harvey (UWA), Oron Catts (SymbioticA) and Dr Mike Alder (UWA)

So grab your friends, fetch a drink and pull up a chair as we pose the question – What does it mean to be human when science mixes it up with animals and technology?
